what you will learn

  • Firstly we'll develop a personalised teaching plan to get you on the right track. We can check out some of the more complex songs that you've always wanted to be able to play.

  • We'll dive into more advanced techniques using the fretting hand (bends, slides, hammer on and more).

  • You'll also develop your rhythm hand - adding percussive elements to your playing, exploring challenging finger-style and plectrum technique.

  • Without even trying, you'll learn more complex theory which will improve your playing and improvisation skills.

  • We can start to look at things like: guitar and amp effects, audio production, what different strings can do and even how to do a basic set-up on your guitar.

  • If you enjoy writing your own music, by the end of our sessions you'll be equipped with a mountain of knowledge to test out in your own songs.

  • If you're a classical player, you'll be developing the ability to play some beautiful pieces.

Do you offer a free trial lesson to see if I think you're the right teacher for me?

Yes, the first lesson lasts 25 minutes and is completely free with no commitment to continue lessons.

I'm a complete beginner. Can I still learn guitar with you?

Of course, that's what I'm here for!

How do I know what level of guitar I'm at?

Don't panic, during the free trial lesson we will talk about your goals, assess your ability and design a teaching plan unique to you.

Do I need a guitar to start lessons?

For the first lesson you can use one of my guitars (I also have a smaller guitar for children). If you decide to continue with lessons then you will need a guitar.

Can you help me to choose a guitar?

Yes I'd be happy to advise you on a suitable guitar whether you're a beginner or an advanced player looking to purchase your next instrument.

Does it matter which type of guitar I choose to learn with?

For a beginner not really, because the things you will learn are essentially transferable to any guitar. As you progress you may find that you prefer one type over another (electric over acoustic for example).

Do I need to be able to read music to learn the guitar?

Absolutely not - I can teach you to read music if you wish but it's not necessary to have any prior knowledge of music reading or theory to start learning guitar.

How often do I need to practice guitar as a beginner?

How fast would you like to progress? What are your goals on guitar? If you just want to learn a few simple songs to play then 2 or 3 times a week for 30 minutes might be enough. Want to be able to play the difficult stuff? Then play everyday. There are no shortcuts here.

At what age do you recommend a child can start learning guitar?

In my experience from 7 years old is a suitable age. However if the child is really motivated to play then of course they can begin a little younger.

What length of lesson do you recommend for a child?

For children between 7 - 10 I would recommend a 30 minute lesson to begin with.

Can I learn electric, acoustic and classical guitar at the same time?

Absolutely - I think learning on different types of guitar can only make you a better player overall by giving you an extensive understanding of the instrument. Plus, it's fun.

I play electric guitar. Do I have to bring my amp with me for the lessons?

Nope, I have electric and acoustic amps here for you to use during the lesson.

Which styles/genres of guitar do you teach?

I like to play and teach all styles of guitar and I have a very broad musical taste so you're in good hands.

Can you help me with songwriting and composition?

Definitely - songwriting is a craft in itself and a skill that one improves over time. I've been writing for many years and enjoy combining my knowledge of songwriting with teaching guitar.

Can I have online lessons with you?

Yes online lessons are possible on request.

Is your teaching studio accessible for people with limited mobility?

Unfortunately not, as there is no elevator in the building. In this case it may be possible to arrange the lesson at another nearby studio or conduct the lesson online.
